You don’t need to lose your job to prepare yourself for the next one. Andy Grove’s statement applies to all of us as well.
If you are currently employed, thank your stars and do the following
1) Again, thank your stars – the picture outside is not all that great and thank God, you are not there.
2) Excel in your current job – exceed expectations, demonstrate dedication and most of all communicate your actions and successes. More on this in a later blog posting.
3) Be ready for anything – this is probably the most important bullet point.
- You never know how the marketplace will behave in the next 6-12 months
- You don’t know how your company will react to marketplace changes
- It is better to be ready for change than to bury your head in the sand and ignore all the datapoints
What does ‘be ready’ mean?
Ready means:
- you completely understand the entire spectrum of your skills and experiences
- you identify the industries and companies that will be in your cross-hairs
- you build your brand by sharing your ideas and perspectives
- you build your personal and professional network
Being ready will prepare you for the next 5 years, not just the next 6 months.
